GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Brainerd’s Sara Wennerstrand in singles and the Warrior doubles team of Brooke Mimmack-Ashley Fitterer captured championships in the North Subsection 8-2A individual tournament Saturday at Choice Health & Fitness.
Their finishes qualified them for the section individual tournament next weekend at Evolution Fitness in Sartell.
Wennerstrand defeated Alexandria’s Carly Snell 6-1, 6-0 for the title to raise her record to 25-4.
“Sara was rock solid throughout the entire championship,” Warriors coach Lisa Salo said. “She was focused and executed her game plan for each opponent very well. She has taken her overall game to another level the past few weeks and is so ready for the next step in tournament play.”
Mimmack and Fitterer defeated Sabrina Okeson-Carly Lunsetter of Thief River Falls 6-4, 6-2 for the championship. They take a 22-5 record to the section tournament.
“Brooke and Ashley played aggressive doubles and looked to seize control of the net,” Salo said. “As each match progressed, their game became more consistent.
“In their final two matches, they had to adjust their strategy as their opponents started to lob in an attempt to neutralize their dominance at the net. Brooke and Ashley remained calm, played patiently, and looked for offensive opportunities with overheads.”
Brainerd’s Caitlin Steffen reached the quarterfinals in singles where she lost to Karlee Jorgenson of Thief River Falls 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
“We are so proud of Caitlin’s tournament play this weekend,” Salo said. “She defeated her opponents in the team competition and in the first round of individuals without giving up a game. In the quarterfinals of the individual tournament she lost a 3-set match that was close to two hours in length. That match boiled down to a few key points.
“Caitlin has grown her game so much this season and plays with such poise. She is continuing to grow in her ability to use various strategies against different styles of players.”
Brainerd’s doubles team of Kristina Anderson-Claire Gunsbury reached the quarterfinals where they were defeated by Okeson-Lunsetter 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
“All season, we have seen Kristina and Claire build their tennis skills and confidence in their doubles play,” Salo said. “They had a tough 3-set loss in the quarters. The team they competed against played a defensive style of tennis, which took Kristina and Claire out of a rhythm in the second set. With that momentum swing, it was tough for Kristina and Claire to regain the aggressive edge.”
