Dan Anderson had a hypothesis.
The Brainerd Warriors head girls swimming and diving coach tested his hypothesis Thursday during Brainerd’s 109-73 Central Lakes Conference victory over St. Cloud Tech at Brainerd High School.
While it likely won’t become law, Anderson was correct.
If you put Hannah McKeag, Erica Rehnblom, Katie Streiff and Fallon Ryan together in the 200-yard medley relay you will break the pool record.
That’s what that foursome did as they posted a 1:55.34 to better the old record of 1:56.31.
“We’re still kind of experimenting and moving kids around a little bit,” said Anderson. “We thought we would put the four fastest splits together to see what we could do. I thought we would break the record if they all swam like they could.
“And, then part of it too was we have a couple of tough meets coming up. Melrose will be tough and Sartell is tough and so this gives them something to think about. Are we going to load that relay up against them or aren’t we?”
McKeag, who also won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, knew the potential was there.
“I saw who was on the relay and I got excited,” said McKeag. “I thought we could probably do this. Then we just went fast and made it happen.
“I think Anderson is just mixing us around to see what could be the possible section relay.”
The relay may or may not stick around. Ryan, a state meet qualifier, usually swims the 200 freestyle, which is the very next race. But with how things went Thursday, Anderson now knows he has options.
“I’m a little bit surprised they got the record in the third meet of the season, but this is a veteran group,” said Anderson. “They are an awfully talented team. They really compete. They train hard. They always step up and swim fast here. It was our first home meet so that got them excited, too.”
Brainerd has a lot of options thanks to a deep roster. Ryan won the 200 individual medley with Streiff in second and Julia Wallace in third.
Streiff won the 100 butterfly with Sydney Erickson and Jamie Wallace placing second and third.
Ryan won the 500 free with Allison Crum in second.
McKeag and Wallace posted a 1-2 finish in the backstroke.
“I’m pretty happy with everything I did tonight,” McKeag said. “They are my fastest times so far this year. I’m shooting for a 56, but I would be happy with a 57 in my backstroke and I really want that 50 free (school) record.”
Rehnblom and Kylie Lang went 1-2 in the breaststroke and Beth Etterman won the diving with Lonie Anderson finishing second. The Warriors swept all three relays to improve to 3-0.
“There is a lot of competition on this team,” Anderson said. “These girls, they look at the lineup and usually what they’re thinking is, ‘My teammate is the person I have to beat.’ They know that what ever race they’re in, somebody on their team is going to swim really fast and they’re going to have to step up.”
