The Crosby-Ironton composite high school mountain bike team is preparing to compete in five races this season.
Students Crosby, Brainerd and Pequot Lakes school districts and home-schooled students make up the composite team.
The team is affiliated with the Minnesota High School Cycling League, under the governance of National Interscholastic Cycling Association. No student is turned away due to lack of athleticism or finances. There are no tryouts. Every student participates and races. The sport will run from August through October.
Practices are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for two hours and Saturdays for three hours at the Cuyuna Mountain Bike Trail System.
Nineteen student-athletes are competing this year:
Senior captains: Bowdrie Nelson, Mitchell Crum
Juniors: Alexis Sommers-Getty, Ethan Monson, Joey McGuire, Michael Jensen
Sophomores: Brendan Brown, Devon Gibson, Dylan Anderson, Logan Strange, Tommy Barnhart, Trevor Pontius
Freshmen: Connor Rono, Dale Yotter, Ethan Waytashek, Gage Smith, Nikita Finnerty, Samuel Elson, Braeden Anderson
Head coach is Shaun Anderson. Assistant coaches are Brandt Elson and Kate Kunz. Ride leaders are Nate Denny, Nick Statz and Dustin Grausam. Adults who work with students must undergo background checks, know CPR and first aid, take a coaching exam and professional development education courses.
Five races are scheduled in September and October, mostly in the metro area, including Inver Grove Heights, St. Cloud, Elk River, River Falls Wis., and Mankato.
Opening races are on flatter courses with fewer technical challenges. The season championship race will feature climbing and technical elements.
Girls race separate from boys. Courses feature 4- and 6-mile loops, mostly single track, with passing zones. Freshman/sophomore races are two laps (approximately 30 minutes). Junior varsity races three laps (45 minutes). Varsity races are four laps (1 hour, 45 minutes). Team scores combine boys and girls scores.
