BAXTER — Ninety-degree temperatures and lots of sun confronted two first-time winners in the Lakes Country Triathlon at Whipple Beach on Sunday.
David Lewis, 39, of Nevis has been competing in triathlons since 2008 and has participated in the Lakes Country Triathlon for several years, but secured his first victory at the event with a time of 1:29.27
“It feels good,” said Lewis. “This is usually a pretty competitive triathlon. I knew I’d be in the top three but you never know.
“The run was my best, I’m a good runner. The swim was tough because I just started swimming, but I’ve gotten better.”
A natural athlete, Lewis participates in up to seven races a year and isn’t fazed by anything, least of all the heat.
“It’s hot out here, but it’s all good, I like the heat,” said Lewis.
The father of two, who trains as a member of the Headwaters Triathlon Club of Nevis, Park Rapids and Bemidji, is headed for a half Ironman in Stillwater next month and has no plans for slowing down.
“Work, kids, family, train; that’s my whole life right now,” he said.
Sara Sampsell-Jones, 38, of Minneapolis came to her third Lakes Country Triathlon and ended up as the top female finisher with a time of 1:28.46. She was the 12th-fastest finisher overall.
“There’s some really good ladies who come out for this every year so it’s always fun and it’s a fun distance,” said Sampsell-Jones. “I grew up a swimmer and a runner but today, I felt my best on the bike.
“You never know and that’s why triathlon is so fun. It’s never a sure thing and every course is different and weather changes your race plan.”
Sampsell-Jones, who competes for The Fix Studio team in Minneapolis, has been spending her weekends in the Brainerd lakes area since she was a kid and now gets to enjoy it with her kids and family.
“My whole family, my sister, my husband and my brother-in-law usually compete in this event every year and our kids do the Saturday race,” she said. “I love being in the Brainerd lakes area. This community up here is a fun race community. This race is fun, and it’s cool to see my family and kids doing a hobby that I did in the place that I grew up. That’s so special.”
Total number of registered participants was 236. There were 38 team finishers, 158 individual finishers, 92 male finishers, and 66 female finishers. Forty individuals did not finish or did not start.
Following are the top 50 overall individual finishers and the top three relays.
