Aitkin’s Emily Mehr scored 20 points and Brainerd’s Kayla Kraemer tallied 12 to help the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars cap off a perfect Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular season.
The Cougars finished 14-0 with Saturday’s 71-53 victory over Martin Luther.
Mehr, a senior post, added 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in the victory. She is averaging 20.9 points and 5.4 rebounds a game while shooting 51 percent from the field and 85 percent from the line. Her 20 points Saturday helped her surpass 1,500 for he career.
Kraemer, a freshman point guard, added four assists and a steal to go with her 12 points. The first-year player posted 16 points, three assists and two rebounds in the Cougars’ victory over Bethany Lutheran Friday.
Top-seeded Morris will play No. 4-seeded St. Scholastica at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the UMAC tournament.
■ Thesing, Concordia win championship
With their 65-49 victory over Gustavus Adolphus Saturday, the Concordia College Cobbers captured the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship.
Brainerd’s Emily Thesing led the Cobbers with 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting. The senior guard was 4-of-7 from 3-point. She added five rebounds, four steals and two assists. The four-year player is averaging 12.9 points and 4.8 rebounds. She’s shooting 36.8 percent from the field and 75.4 percent from the line.
Concordia finished the season with a 19-3 conference record and the No. 1 seed in the MIAC tournament. It’s the Cobbers’ first conference crown since 1989-90.
Thesing was named the conference player of the week for the second time this season on Feb. 4.
Concordia will have a bye in the first round of the conference tournament. The Cobbers will host the lowest-remaining seed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
That could be the College of St. Benedict Blazers, who are the No. 4 seed and feature sisters Emily and Mattie Lueck of Pequot Lakes. Those two helped the Blazers close out the regular season with a 60-58 victory over St. Olaf. St. Ben’s was the last team to beat Concordia Feb. 6.
■ Hoge, Stanfield conclude careers
Aitkin’s Sara Hoge and Crosby-Ironton’s Sam Stanfield concluded their four-year careers at Northland College with Saturday’s 66-58 loss to North Central.
Hoge finished with 22 points, eight rebounds, three assists and one steal in 38 minutes of action.
Stanfield added 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots in 39 minutes.
Northland finished the regular season 6-18.
