MINNEAPOLIS — 1999 was a good year for the Brainerd Warriors dance team.

So was 2013.

The Warriors placed second in the High Kick division of the Class 3A state tournament Saturday at Target Center.

Brainerd scored 719 points and recorded 10 rank points to fall behind only defending state champion Eastview.

“Just to make finals these days is an honor,” said Warriors head coach Cindy Clough. “We thought we would be up there this year because we have had quite a few wins in kick this year. The kids and coaches have worked really hard and really well together. We have a very strong team work ethic. We have 29 dancers and can only put 24 on the floor with this routine. We had a lot of kids, sharing spots and being very big about going in and out. No complaining and an extreme team work attitude.”

That attitude paid off as Brainerd, which performed first in the finals, tied Eastview’s Routine Effectiveness score of 77. The Lightning of Eastview, which now owns seven state titles, collected 742 points and a rank score of 5.

Brainerd was consistently good with its routine as it was in second place after the prelims. Eastview was first and St. Cloud Tech third. Tech tumbled to fifth, while Burnsville jumped to the Tigers’ place in third.

“Between prelims and finals we watched film and picked apart our routine,” said Clough. “We tried to find any way to gain a few extra points. We had been 17 total points from first and 38 from third, so we felt pretty strong that we could medal and maintain our second, but tried everything to raise it to first. Eastview had a strong routine and won for the third year in a row. We worked on hitting a few formations stronger and achieved that. Most aspects of the routine were better at night. Energy, kicks. We did have one kick line we felt we hit stronger in prelims. Our goals is to get as many 10’s as possible. We had 11 in prelims and 16 in finals. Eastview had 27 tens in finals. Burnsville had 2 for a comparison. We really felt great about our performance.”

1999 was Brainerd’s last of eight state titles. It finished third last season and its last runner up finish was in 1997.

Brainerd’s Abbi Browne and Brenna Chisholm were selected to the Class 3A high kick all-tournament team.

“It was a great way to end our dance season and last dance,” said Chisholm.
