MINNEAPOLIS — Following an eighth-place finish in Class 3A jazz qualifying competition Friday afternoon, the Brainerd Warriors failed to advance to the finals in the state tournament at the Target Center.
The top six teams advanced to Friday night’s jazz finals.
Warriors coach Cindy Clough said Brainerd turned in a “great final jazz performance but it was a disappointing finish.” Clough said the team danced third and had one of its best performances of the season.
“We were so proud of our kids,” she said. “It was a strong performance and we are pleased with that.
“The first four places were pretty clear. I knew who they would be. The last two final spots, we felt, were between four teams. We were hoping to squeak in, but it did not go our way.
“We will just hit kick harder (Saturday).”
Wayzata, Maple Grove, Eastview, Hopkins, Blaine and Spring Lake Park made the finals.
“Our total points showed that we were close to finals,” Clough said. “We even had more total points than some who made finals.”

Judges observe routines and award points on a 100-point scale. Judging criteria are subdivided into five categories: 1) Jazz skills; 2) Execution; 3) Choreography; 4) Difficulty; and 5) Routine effectiveness.
Unique to the jazz division, the skills category requires judges to look for technique of turns, leaps and jumps, and the difficulty of those skills.
