Area Girls Basketball: Ackerman reaches milestone in PR-B win

PINE RIVER — Autumn Ackerman tallied 16 points and eight rebounds to surpass the 1,000 point milestone as Pine River-Backus routed Park Rapids 77-26 in Thursday’s non-conference game.

Ackerman now has 1,007 career points to go with 1,070 career rebounds to become the only PR-B Tiger to reach the century mark in both categories.

“She’s been playing a long time and works really hard during the game,” Tigers head coach Randy Schwegel said. “There is not a better kid this could have happened to and is one of those kids who I’m going to hate to see graduate.”

Tatum Sheley added 22 points and 12 assists as the Tigers won their fifth straight.

BAXTER — A last minute change in scheduling enabled the Lake Region Christian Hornets to play Thursday and they responded with a 59-51 non-conference win over the Pillager Huskies to wrap up their regular season undefeated at 20-0.

The originally scheduled St. Francis Patriots cancelled because of sickness. That prompted Hornets’ head coach Steve Ogren to call Pillager head coach Wade Mortenson. Pillager didn’t have the maximum number of games scheduled this season so agreed to play the Hornets at the last moment.

Lake Region’s Bethany Cressman tallied 15 points and had 12 rebounds. Marlee Moore finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds and Emily Beltran contributed 12 points, 10 assists and five steals.

Sarah Neururer led Pillager with 24 points and Carly Bell added 15 points.

Kayla Miller led all scorers with 21 and Katie White added 13 for the Patriots, who have won four of their last five games and improve to 15-8.
