CEDAR PARK, TX — The Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League assigned defenseman Carl Sneep to the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League.

Sneep, a Brainerd High School graduate, was acquired Jan. 24 by Dallas from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

The 25-year-old Sneep had skated in 29 games this season for the Wheeling Nailers, Pittsburgh’s ECHL affiliate, recording a plus-12 rating and 15 points (3 goals, 12 assists), which ranked third among Nailers defensemen in scoring.

Sneep also skated in one AHL game this season for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He appeared in 102 career AHL games with the Baby Pens, posting 27 points (4 goals, 23 assists), 65 penalty minutes and a plus-22 rating.

In his first two games with Texas, Sneep had no points, was a plus 1 and had four minutes in penalties. The Stars play at Houston Friday night.

Sneep played four years of NCAA Division I hockey for Boston College of the Hockey East, helping the Eagles win national championships in 2008 and 2010. He appeared in 157 career NCAA games and tallied 64 points (17 goals, 47 assists) and 75 penalty minutes.

He was drafted by Pittsburgh in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut with the Penguins Dec. 17, 2011, against the Buffalo Sabres, notching an assist for his first career NHL point, a plus-one rating and recording 16:19 of ice time.
