Area Girls Basketball: Moenkedick, Pirates upset Henning

HENNING — The Verndale Pirates, led by Teresa Moenkedick’s 26 points, outscored Henning by 22 points in the second half to gain a 53-37 Park Region Conference upset Tuesday.

It was the first conference loss for the Hornets this season.

Sarah Moenkedick added 10 points for the Pirates, who trailed by six at halftime, but held Henning to 12 second-half points.

SANDSTONE — Nine different Aitkin Gobblers scored during Tuesday’s 61-29 Great River Conference victory over East Central.

Cassie Sandberg scored 12 points and Lisa Anderson added 10 for the 15-3 Gobblers, who have won five straight and 12 of their last 13.

Mikayla Michaletz added eight rebounds and six points and Megan Welshons and Bailey Nordean each added five assists.

Marlee Moore added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Emily Beltran dished out 12 assists for the 17-0 Hornets.

It was the ninth straight win for the Tigers, who swept the season series from Nevis.

Autumn Ackerman added 11 points and six steals, while Felthous added eight steals.
