Area Girls Basketball: Cardinals bounce Pequot

Pearson reaches 1,000

STAPLES — Kelly Pearson scored a game-high 25 points and reached 1,000 career points as Class 2A’s ninth-ranked Staples-Motley Cardinals defeated the Pequot Lakes Patriots 81-58 in a Mid-State Conference game Thursday.

“(Pearson) made her goal about three minutes in from two free throws,” said Cardinals head coach Arden Beachy. “I felt like she played tight before break and she was thinking about it too much and I told her she should forgot about it and she started shooting like she was capable of it.”

Mikayla Wing added 16 points, Jelin Beachy scored 13 points and Jasmine McGillivray scored 12 points for the Cardinals, who are unbeaten in conference play and have won five of its last six games.

Kayla Miller notched 16 points and Jessica Kreitz added 13 points for Pequot, who dropped its first conference game.
