AREA WRESTLING: W-DC squeaks out win over Cardinals

WADENA — The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines edged the Staples-Motley Cardinals 40-39 winning on Criteria H for most first points scored (12-10) after Tuesday’s Mid-State Conference match ended 39-39.

Salm Waln won by fall at 132 to win his 75th career match and Lee Spencer got his first career win with a pin at 132 for the Wolverines.

Also winning with pins for W-DC were Josh Lawson and Isaac Malone.

Five Cardinals turning in pins were Eric Lisson, Jake Bendson, Tyler Pogreba, Nick Jennings and Jordan Heldman.

Gobblers sweep

AITKIN — The Aitkin Gobblers were the big winner during Tuesday’s triangular as they defeated Mille Lacs 62-9 in a Great River Conference meet, and Crosby-Ironton 43-22 in a non-conference dual.

Jack Braton, Noah Landrus, Brian Wold, Jerod Novak, Isaac Novak, Kyle Lynn, and Roy Wigton each won their two matches for Aitkin. Isaac Novak raised his season record to 16-3 while Wold improved to 15-3.

The Rangers defeated Mille Lacs 40-37 for a non-conference win. Caleb Kreitter, Derik Olander, Brett Nelson, Austin Stangel and Cole Grinsteinner each recorded two wins for C-I.
