FERGUS FALLS — Sarah Fairbanks skied to a fourth-place finish in the girls race and both Brainerd Warrior teams were runners-up at the Fergus Falls Invite Tuesday.
Fairbanks completed the 4.7-kilometer freestyle course in 16:31. Warriors co-head coach Mary Claire said Fairbanks was leading about halfway through the race when she suffered a nasty fall on a sharp turn at the bottom of a steep hill.
“She was very upset at the end of the race, which is a good thing,” Ryan said. “When you take a bad fall, it’s going to cost you, but it’s better that it happened today than in the pursuit races coming up.”
Sam Nesheim, in 14th place, was the first Warrior boys finisher.
Primarily junior varsity and junior high skiers competed for the Warriors.
“It was an opportunity for our younger skiers to step up and ski a longer race against some stiff competition,” Ryan said. “Our CLC race will be at this site so some of these kids will participate in that.
“As coaches, it also was an opportunity to see how the course shapes up for that race too.”
