AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL: Cardinals win Monticello tournament

MONTICELLO — Kelly Pearson tallied 11 points to lead the Staples-Motley Cardinals past Monticello 53-46 for the championship of the Monticello Tournament Saturday night.

Pearson was the only Cardinal to reach double figures.

Staples-Motley improved to 9-3 overall while Monticello fell to 10-2. The loss snapped the Magic’s 9-game win streak.

“It was a good test. We had four days off over Christmas break before we had to come back and play three straight games,” Staples-Motley coach Arden Beachy said.

WALKER — Caitlin Volkmann netted 18 points to lead Wadena-Deer Creek past Pequot Lakes 58-47 in the third-place game of the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley tournament Saturday.

Kayla Miller tallied 16 points for the Patriots while Vanessa Lane scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Pequot Lakes has lost three of its last four. The Wolverines have done the opposite, winning three of their last four.

PINE RIVER — Brittany Kelley recorded 15 points while Kendra Brasel and Autumn Ackerman added 13 as Pine River-Backus routed Barnum 61-27 in non-conference play Saturday.

Tigers senior Tatum Sheley recorded four points in her season debut after missing time with a torn ACL that she suffered during the 2011-2012 basketball season.

“We just wanted to get her some minutes and get her back into the flow of things,” PR-B head coach Randy Schwegel said.
