GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Jacob Ellingson’s goal pushed the Brainerd Warriors to a 1-0 first period lead, but it was short lived as Red River East defeated Brainerd 6-3 in Thursday’s quarterfinals of the Grand Forks Tournament.
Adam Fischer and Alexander Mimmack scored third period goals and Cole Smith had two assists for the Warriors, who dropped to 4-4.
Brainerd goalie Kyle Helmberger registered 23 saves before being pulled with a little more than two minutes left.
Jacob Bensen led Grand Forks with three goals, including an empty netter with 25 seconds left, and an assist.
Brainerd faces Bismarck Century in the consolation semifinals Friday at noon.
