AREA BOYS BASKETBALL: Jansson, Auger lead Cardinals past Park Rapids

STAPLES — Led by the three-point prowess of Kyle Jansson and Seth Auger, the Staples-Motley Cardinals defeated Park Rapids 76-70 in their Mid-State Conference opener Thursday.

Jansson led all scorers with 23 points, including nine from behind the arc. Seth Auger added 21 points, and also notched nine from three point range.

Pine River-Backus 76, Laporte 46

PINE RIVER — Beau Howard poured in 25 points and Zach Struss added 23 to lead the Pine River-Backus Tigers to their first win of the season, 76-46, over the Laporte Wildcats in Thursday’s Northland Conference game.

Howard also tallied eight rebounds, seven steals and seven assists while Struss finished with 10 rebounds and four steals.

Travon Pederson contributed 10 points for PR-B.
