MINNEAPOLIS — Staples-Motley’s Jaelin Beachy finished a little shy of her goal but earned all-state honors in the process.

The Cardinals’ junior placed fifth in the Class 1A 100-yard breaststroke final Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center to make the podium with a time of 1:06.53.

Beachy’s goal was to swim 1:04.9 by the end of the season but she did shave 12/100ths in the finals off of her prelim time.

“My goal was top three, I didn’t get top 3, but I’m happy with how I did,” said Beachy, who was making her fourth appearance in the state breaststroke race. “I swam my personal best in that race so I couldn’t ask for much more.

“I went up one place from where I was last year so I’m happy with that.”

In the Class 2A meet, Brainerd diver Beth Etterman finished 11th, three places away from the podium. In her second state meet, Etterman accumulated 340.80 points and moved up two places from 2011.

“In her final three dives, two of them she dove well,” Warriors head coach Dan Anderson said. “I know she wishes she had one back. If you’re just a tick off down there it doesn’t take much for the judges to dock you points.

“I know Beth’s good enough to be a top eight diver in the state. She just left a few points out there.”

Warriors diving coach Mary Streiff said Etterman had an “OK meet.”

“We knew she had some strong dives left in the finals but so does everyone else,” Streiff added. “She moved up from 15th (in the prelims) to 11th. Last year she was 14th so she’s making her way up.

“Her goal is to be on the podium — top eight. That didn’t happen this year, but she’s got another year of high school diving and we’ll see where she takes the sport after that.”

In the 1A 50 freestyle, Beachy finished 10th with a time of 24.65. A year ago, in her first state 50 free, she failed to make the consolation finals.

“My goal was to try and win my heat,” she said. “I didn’t make that but I swam my fastest time ever so I’m happy with that.

“It was a crazy race. The amount of time that separated first and last (in the consolation final) was barely anything. It was a fast race. I’m happy with how I did.”

Brainerd’s Fallon Ryan finished 16th in the 2A 200 free with a time of 1:58.40. The Warrior sophomore had gone 1:55.93 in Friday’s prelims.

“To make it into the finals she had to drop two seconds, and she did that,” Anderson said of Ryan, who moved up four places from her 2011 state finish. “Fallon swam a great race in the prelims. She would have had to go another second or so faster to move up.

“She took it out fast, then she said she kind of lost her legs. It was the third-best time of her life, but I know she didn’t feel very good about it.”

Beachy hopes to make one more state appearance before calling it a high school career.

“I’m happy with how my season went,” she said. “I broke quite a few personal records and set some new school records. Our team is getting better. There’s hope for next year with our relays, so it should be a good senior year.”
