ROYALTON — Senior quarterback Beau Howard ran for a touchdown and passed for another to lead the No. 5-seeded Pine River-Backus Tigers past No. 4 Royalton 20-8 in Tuesday’s Section 6-1A quarterfinals.
Drey Loge hauled in a 38-yard pass from Howard in the third period to open the scoring after a scoreless first half.
Jared Adkins put the Tigers up 14-0 early in the fourth when he scored from a yard out and then ran for the conversion.
Jordan Smeija pulled Royalton within 14-8 on a 3-yard run and the conversion before Howard iced the game with a 16-yard burst at the 2:30 mark.
Howard finished with 152 all-purpose yards, completing six of 10 passes for 113 yards and rushing for 39 yards on eight carries.
Loge led the ground game with 20 carries for 93 yards and Brandon Mager caught three passes for 63 yards.
