GRAND FORKS, N.D. — An incomplete 2-point conversion pass denied fifth-seeded Pequot Lakes a chance to bump off No. 4 Crookston as the Patriots lost to the Pirates 21-20 in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round of the Section 8-3A playoffs.
Pequot climbed within the final score on a 1-yard TD run by Justin Mackenthun with 37 seconds left. The Patriots then went for two and were unsuccessful.
Zach Northenscold opened the Pequot Lakes scoring with a 5-yard pass from Jordan Redmond.
Tyler Tappe and Mackenthun each scored for the Patriots in the final quarter as they ended the season with a 2-7 record.
The Patriots suffered their first section-opening loss in five years. Pequot had beaten the Pirates 34-20 in the regular season.
