GRAND FORKS, N.D. — It wasn’t easy, but the Staples-Motley Cardinals will be making their eighth consecutive trip to the Class 1A state team tournament.
Mikayla Wing and Emily Israelson captured wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles in the final team matches of the day to rally the top-seeded Cardinals to a 4-3 over third-seeded Crookston in the championship round of the Section 8-1A team tournament at Choice Health and Fitness Club Friday.
Posting doubles wins in the title round were Maggie O’Keefe-Kelsey Zetah at No. 1 and Linsey Johnson-Nikki Edin at No. 3.
“There were a lot of very close matches with great points, but the girls handled the pressure very well,” said first-year Cardinal head coach Kayla Huether. “The top four teams were competitive but I did have confidence that the girls would pull it out.”
The Cardinals, ranked fourth in the state, advance to the Class 1A state team tournament at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Oct. 23-24.
Earlier in the day, Staples-Motley defeated fourth-seeded Park Rapids 4-3 in the semi-finals as the Cards swept all three doubles matches with Annie Kautto-Brooke Wolhowe joining O’Keefe-Zetah and Johnson-Edin as winners. Wing added a win at No. 1 singles.
The second-seeded Pequot Lakes Patriots were hoping to be the ones to upset the Mid-State Conference rival S-M. However, their team season came to an end with a 4-3 loss to Crookston in the semifinal round.
Haley Wiebolt and Syndney Holt captured singles victories while Elli Erholtz-Lauren Bengtson won at No. 2 doubles for Pequot.
“I think we had a better season then we might have expected so we’re very pleased with how well we did,” said Pequot head coach Monica Sergent. “I think we improved steadily throughout the season. We hope to build on this and do even better next year.”
The first round of the individual tournament followed the team competition Friday with semifinals and finals scheduled for Saturday.
Advancing for Staples-Motley were Wing in singles play and O’Keefe-Zetah in doubles, all with 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Wiebolt advanced in singles play for Pequot Lakes with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win. The Pequot doubles teams faced grueling two-hour, three-set matches, but both managed to advance with Erholtz-Bengston winning 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4 and Elli Heggerston-Carly Fyle coming out on top 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Macy Hartman was the only player for Wadena-Deer Creek to advance with a 6-1, 6-3 singles win.
