Gunner Johnson, a 2010 graduate of Staples-Motley High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent and accepted a full-tuition scholarship to play baseball for the Division I Butler University Bulldogs in Indianapolis.
Johnson, a left-hander, pitched for Iowa Lakes Community College for two years and was ranked in the top 10 in the NJCAA in strikeouts during the 2012 season.
Johnson earned all-academic second-team honors in cross country and baseball his freshman year at Iowa Lakes. He was a first-team all-academic selection in cross country and baseball his sophomore year.
His high school baseball honors included participation in the Lions All-Star series, all-state, all-area, all-conference, Golden Arm, Golden Glove, team batting champion and most valuable player.
In addition, Johnson has been offered a contract to play for the Slippery Rock Sliders in Slippery Rock, Pa., for the summer of 2013.
