BAXTER — Madaline Waters and Ally Smith both knocked in two goals to help the Brainerd Warriors to their sixth straight victory Saturday with a 4-2 win over Moorhead at Southdale Fields.
Waters scored twice in the first half and Smith twice in the second half of the key Section 8-2A matchup.
“Maddie Waters probably didn’t realize how important her goal was to the success of our game,” said Brainerd head coach Ricky Lacerte. “Her second goal was just as devastating. (Moorhead) had one of the best defenders I have seen this season. Their No. 2 was extraordinary and was the first player to give Emily Beltran a run for her money. What they didn’t expect is that we have so many more talented players who can fill in on offense. We are not the one-dimensional team people might think.”
Brainerd’s Heather Campbell stopped seven shots on net in the first half, but Moorhead put 12 shots on her in the second. She stopped 10 of them to finish 2ith 17 saves.
The Warriors improve to 8-0-3 on the season and are currently the second ranked team in the Section 8-2A (QRF behind St. Michael-Albertville.
Moorhead is ranked fourth in the section with a 7-6-1 overall record.
“Moorhead has been our toughest competition yet,” said Brainerd head coach Ricky Lacerte. “If we meet again in sections it should be another battle of defenses. Though we were able to shut down their top two scorers, it wasn’t easy. They are a physical team and it seems to me that everyone comes to Brainerd with the impression that is our type of play, but it’s not.
