ST. CLOUD — Chad Weiss pitched another complete-game gem as the Lastrup Lakers beat the Region 6 champion Jordan Brewers 5-1 in the second round of the Class C state tournament Saturday at Putz Field.
The Brainerd High School graduate allowed six hits, struck out nine, walked two and hit a batter while throwing 125 pitches as the Lakers advanced to next weekend’s Sweet 16. They will play Waconia, which dismantled Region 9 champion Morris 21-3 in seven innings in the second round.
Lastrup and Waconia will square off at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept., 1 at Joe Faber Field. Waconia finished second in last year’s state tournament, losing to Isanti in the championship game.
Weiss improved his record to 11-0. He held the Brewers scoreless until the bottom of the ninth. The right-hander didn’t allow a Jordan runner to reach third base until two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
Lastrup opened the scoring in the top of the third. Nate Janson led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. On an 0-2 pitch, Weiss drilled a double to score Janson.
The score stayed 1-0 until the top of the seventh. Jason Sadlovsky led off with a double. Dustin Schmaltz bunted Sadlovsky to third. On the play, the pitcher threw high to first, allowing Schmaltz to reach on an error.
Jordan then brought in Joe Lucas, a draftee from Arlington. Scott Janson hit the first pitch for a sacrifice fly, scoring Sadlovsky.
Schmaltz stole second. One out later, Brandon Lochner squirted one off the end of the bat. The pitcher’s throw to first eluded the first baseman and Schmaltz scored for a 3-0 Lastrup lead.
Reggie Litke and Rick Schlieman started the Lastrup eighth with base hits. With two outs, Lastrup player/manager Shawn Fischer delivered a pinch-hit 2-run single to make it 5-0.
Jordan scored its lone run in the ninth as Trent Bohnsack blooped an RBI single behind shortstop. Weiss got a fly out and a line drive back to the mound to end the game.
