Jane Hansen of Brainerd has 15 lakes remaining in her quest to swim one mile in 50 lakes to raise money for the Brainerd Lakes YMCA’s aquatics program to commemorate the Brainerd YMCA’S 50th anniversary celebration this fall.
Y member Margaret Schaefer is kayaking the distance and lakes with Hansen.
Hansen is chronicling her adventure at http://50lakesin50days.blogspot.com.
She recently wrote that “so far it has been a very fun adventure. Margie and I are overwhelmed with all the positive response and support from the community. Since we have 26 days left of the 50, we will spread the remaining 15 out a little more than we have so far.
“We have been so blessed with such a long string of beautiful, hot weather (perfect for swimming!) that we have been able to accomplish a lot in a short period of time.
“The 50th day will be Aug. 17 where we will swim the 50th lake at Whipple Beach (weather permitting of course). Everyone is welcome to join us either on the beach, on the water in a kayak or in a type of boat, or if a swimmer, in the water. What a fun way to honor our YMCA’s 50th anniversary!”
In an email, Hansen noted that “We have raised about $8,500. The big goal (to get both the alligator and the safety pads for the lily pad crossing) is about $12,400. With that said, every dollar donated will go to good use in the aquatics department, regardless if the big goal is met or not.
“We are in dire need of new equipment for our swimming lessons (educational toys, swim belts, etc.), flotation noodles for both swimming lessons and aquacise classes, aqua jog belts and swim team equipment (kick boards, training videos, temporary trainers, forearm fulcrum paddles, hand paddles, etc.)”
Donations may be made through PayPal directly on the blog or can be dropped off or sent to the YMCA with a notation that it is for the lake swims.
