Maggie Heggerston of Pequot Lakes, shot an 84 Sunday during the Tri-State Optimist Qualifier at Cragun’s Legacy Courses to finish third and qualify for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship.
Heggerston, a two-time Class 2A state tournament participant, finished four shots behind Lila Kendall Taylor of McLean, Va,, who won the girls 15-18 division with an 80. Grand Rapids’ Dani DelGreco was second with an 82.
The Optimist championship will be July 24-29 at PGA National Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.
Last season, Heggerston qualified for the International championship in the girls 13-14 age group and finished 50th.
Dakota Waverek of Staples secured the first alternate spot for the boys 14-15 division as he fired an 80.
Waverek, who helped the Staples-Motley Cardinals boys team to state this spring, will compete in the championship if Max Redezke of Lakeville, Sam Sicard of Stillwater or Alex Rogan of Lino Lakes can not make the tournament.
Others area players that competed were Joe Foley of East Gull Lake, who placed seventh in the boys 14-15 division followed by Reed Hines of Little Falls in 12th place and Tom Burgstaler of Ironton in a tie for 16th place.
Thomas Stoxen of East Gull Lake finished tied for 12th in the boys 16-18 division. Brainerd’s Tyson Genz tied for 15th, Staples’ Mitch Hagenson tied for 33rd, Trent Hagenson was 36th and Pequot Lakes’ Kevin Beltz 39th.
