Preston Weber of Pierz was selected the Section 5 winner of the scholar athlete of the year award given by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association on Saturday.
The award is voted on by athletic directors and includes a 6-state area.
In March, Weber was selected as the state champion by the Minnesota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. There is only one boys and one girls state champion for all classes.
Weber is now one of eight students competing to be the national champion. The state and region awards were both accompanied by a $1,000 scholarship.
The competition involves a review of a student’s academic and athletic accomplishments as well as a written essay.
Weber has committed to the University of Minnesota where he was one of eight students awarded Minnesota’s highest academic scholarship, the Maroon and Gold Scholarship, out of 6,500 applicants.
