DULUTH — Alex Anderson and Dan Klucas made history for Aitkin, becoming the first Gobblers to win a section championship after winning the doubles title in the Section 7-1A individual tournament Wednesday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
They defeated Virginia’s Blair Seitz-Marc Kresbach 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match after dispatching Jeremy Amys-Guiga Audito (Hermantown) 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals.
“This is the first-ever boys section championship in singles or doubles,” said Aitkin coach Joe Walz. “We’ve had state participants in the past, but they got there by placing second in the sections.
“I told them that their strengths lie at the net – to get in there and face the fire. They probably made about 80 percent of their serves and then got to the net and dominated.”
According to Walz, Anderson and Klucas, both seniors, played No. 1 and 2 singles most of the season before switching to doubles for the section.
In singles Wednesday, junior Lyle Nyberg lost his semifinal match to Joey Kronzer (Duluth Marshall) 6-1, 6-0. Krozner went on to repeat as section champ.
“Kronzer placed in the top four at state last year and should be one of the favorites there again this year,” said Walz.
In a match for third place, Nyberg was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Cook County’s Lars Scanell. He finishes 15-6.
The top two singles players and top two doubles teams advance to the Class 1A state individual tournament at the Read Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis June 7-8.
