Gunnar Askegaard sent an ace serve screaming into the far right corner of the court.
Then he let out a satisfying yell and bear-hugged No. 1 doubles teammate Trent Anderson, who teamed with Askegaard to pull out the decisive match and give the Brainerd Warriors a 4-3 Central Lakes Conference win over the Sartell Sabres on Tuesday.
Askegaard-Anderson won the first set 6-3 before falling 5-7 in the second. They rallied in the third to post a 7-5 win.
Brainerd’s other wins were by Lenka Zelinska at No. 2 singles and Bobby Posch at No. 3. Reno Fussy and Jared Stearns provided the other doubles win as Brainerd remained unbeaten in CLC play as well as overall.
“We were on the ropes,” Warriors coach Bruce Thompson said. “Sartell was outplaying us. And credit Gunnar and Trent for coming back. But don’t think as a coaching staff that we weren’t worried about that match because we saw our No. 3 doubles go down in a tiebreaker and all of a sudden the pressure’s on these guys, they’ve got to pull it out and they did.
“They were playing a lot of points with no energy, and all of a sudden in the last three games the energy was there and the play was there. I wished they would have done that all match long but they picked it up at the right time.”
