EVELETH — Alex Anderson and Lyle Nyberg each won two singles matches and the doubles team of Chris Carlberg-Bryce Haugly went 2-0 as the Aitkin Gobblers were edged by Virginia 4-3 and beat Eveleth-Gilbert 6-1 on Monday.
“Alex and Dan (Klucas) at No. 1 and 2 singles are playing outstanding, they’re neck and neck,” Aitkin coach Joe Walz said. “We flip-flopped them today, one started at No. 1, the other at No. 2.
“Our doubles needs a little work yet but for where we are in the season we’re doing fine. That will pick up as the season goes on.”
Walz was pleased with Monday’s play, particularly against Virginia.
“Virginia is ranked at the top in our section, and we lost to them 4-3,” Walz said. “Dan lost 10-8 in a tiebreaker so we were just a point away from beating them.”
