Pine River-Backus High School graduate and Bethel University senior Taylor Sheley was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball player of the year.
Former Brainerd Warriors and Concordia College junior Emily Thesing was named to the all-conference first team while Crosby-Ironton graduate and St. Catherine senior Megan Zillmer was named to the sportsmanship team.
Sheley, a former Brainerd Dispatch Player of the Year, led the conference in scoring with 19.3 points per game. She also ranked among the conference’s best in free throw percentage, 3-pointers, steals, minutes played, rebounding, assists, 3-point shooting percentage and blocked shots.
This is Sheley’s third year making the all-conference first team. Bethel finished 14-12 overall, 12-10 in the conference.
Thesing, a guard for the 18-9 Cobbers, averaged 11.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and a team-high 2.8 assists per conference game. She was sixth in the league in assists and 15th in free throw percentage (72.8 percent).
Zillmer averaged 5.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 39 assists, 27 steals and three blocked shots for the 1-24 Wildcats.
