MINNEAPOLIS — Brainerd freshman Seth Murrey dove into the finals of the Class 2A diving competiton Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center after finishing 15th in the semifinals.
He was 16th in the preliminaries with a score of 142.80 after his first five dives with top 20 of 30 divers advancing to the semifinals.
Three dives later, Murrey moved into the top 16 to advance to Saturday’s finals with an eight-dive total of 230.25.
“He had a terrific last dive to finish in the top 16,” said Brainerd diving coach Owen Trout. “He had to score sixes or better from the judges on the last dive and that’s what he did scoring 36.6 with the degree of difficulty factored in.”
“He was diving in the top 10 for a little while, but missed a couple of dives. He’s a freshman making his first appearance at a state meet and is getting a lot of experience.”
The only freshman to make the finals, Murrey will have three more dives in Saturday’s final.
