Give Rachelle LeBlanc two more years and she may be standing on top of the podium at the state meet.
The Little Falls Flyers sophomore finished fifth on balance beam and ninth in the all-around competition in the Class 1A state meet Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion at the University of Minnesota.
LeBlanc scored a 9.30 on beam for her fifth-place medal.
“It was really nerve-wracking,” LeBlanc said of beam competition. “It’s such a big place. A a lot of people are watching you.
“I knew that it was probably my best event to place in ... I’ve practiced a long time for it. My muscle memory definitely kicked in because I was so nervous. I prayed with my mom (Flyers co-head coach Shelley LeBlanc) before beam, kept on breathing and tried to be calm.”
In the all-around, LeBlanc accumulated 36.725 points.
She scored 9.05 on bars, the only event she didn’t qualify for state individually but needed to compete on as an all-arounder.
“Rachelle had a really nice bar routine to help get the jitters out for her,” Shelley LeBlanc said.
“Rachelle performed a great (beam) routine and stuck it. It’s always a relief to get that beam routine over with.
“Floor is her most consistent event and she was looking forward to it, but was a little nervous as she was first up on floor. This caused us to change how she warmed up. She couldn’t do a lot of tumbling because she needed to be fresh for her routine. She had an awesome routine, sticking most of her landings, but on her second pass, she had a little bobble which cost her 2/10ths.
“Rachelle threw one of her best vaults ever and scored a very nice score. She was very pleased, as were her coaches, with her performance at state.”
2A: Grausam finishes 24th on vault
Brainerd’s Madison Grausam scored 9.3250 to finish 24th on vault.
“I threw a new vault (layout Tsuk),” Grausam said. “I just wanted to land it. I went for it, and kind of stuck it.”
“It’s my last year and I knew I wasn’t going to place with a pike Tsuk so I was going to do the layout no matter what.
“For my last meet, I think it was very good. I had an overall good season. It was my best. Making it to state definitely topped it off nice. I was the last vaulter at the state meet. It was really fun being the last vaulter and showing everyone what I’ve got.”
