Terry Wasland of Little Falls was named the state Nordic skiing coach of the year.
Wasland won Section 8 honors, which made him a candidate for the state award.
He started the Little Falls program 17 years ago. After establishing a respectable boys and girls program, district budget cuts eliminated middle level sports and the varsity level ski team faced the possibility of elimination.
In response, Wasland led a parent, student, and community effort to raise funds and saved the program.
In addition, Wasland suffered a heart attack a few years ago while skiing with his team at practice. A healthy Wasland now leads a thriving program. He still skis the same trails as his athletes and leads by example in character as well as technique.
Little Falls team is now at its largest ever level of participants (almost 70 skiers), which is among the biggest Section 8. The Flyer girls team won the section for the seventh straight time this year and a conference title for the sixth straight year.
Wasland voluntarily organized and directed the newly formed Granite Ridge Conference meet where the girls won the title and the boys finished second.
