The Brainerd Warriors dance team took second place in high kick and tied for third in jazz Saturday at the Blaine Invitational.

“We were excited about our results,” Warriors coach Cindy Clough said. “In the kick division, we danced early in the lineup and brought out our new routine. We feel it is going to be strong and that we still have not peaked in terms of our performance. We still have a few segments to tweak in regard to choreography ...

“We are encouraged to place this high, especially dancing early out of 18 teams. All teams from our section were there, which is exciting, as they are the teams we would need to get by to make it to state.”

Clough was encouraged by the jazz competition. Brainerd and Blaine tied for third, but with a tie-breaker formula, Brainerd dropped to fourth.

“Tech is having an exceptionally great year,” she said. “... Their jazz team is strong and they have a great routine. We love our routine as well and it is a crowd-pleaser. We had the highest routine effectiveness score, even over the first-place team, so we felt great about that.

“We have come so far technically as well. This is the largest number of jazz kids we have put on the floor for a few years. The difficulty level is so high that it is hard to field a large team. We have never tied with Blaine before, which is the strong favorite in our section. Blaine won our section for years in jazz, so we are pumped to have tied them.”

Clough said the Warriors beat Duluth East and Anoka, two teams that edged out Brainerd last year when it did not make it to state in jazz.

“So we are hoping to stay ahead of them,” she said.

Brainerd’s junior varsity kick team took fifth out of 10 teams. Coach Amy Peeters said the JV did not have its strongest performance of the year and that execution errors hurt the team.

Brainerd competes next Saturday at the Wayzata Invitational.
