BLUE EARTH — Nate Adams and Casey Biever won championships as the Brainerd Warriors finished second at Saturday’s Dick Maher Invitational.
Adams beat Luke Norland of Jackson County Central 4-3 for the 152-pound title.
“Nate wrestled a very good tournament,” Warriors co-head coach Mike Boran said. “It was probably one of the top two or three weight classes in the tournament as far as quality of wrestlers.
“Nate wrestled well, he wrestled smart. The biggest difference I’ve seen in Nate compared to last year is he’s able to push through six minutes when he’s tired and keep going after the guy. He took the guy down in the finals in the last minute, then held on to win the match. It was tied and he took him down. The guy escaped but Nate held on for the win. His conditioning and toughness is better than last year.”
Biever defeated Kysten Zierke of Blue Earth 4-0 for the title at 195.
“Casey wrestled a smart tournament,” Boran said. “He was the No. 1 seed. He wrestled 220 last year when he only weighed 190.
“If there’s a good change in the weight classes this year it’s fit in for him and he was able to have a good tournament. Casey won a good match in the finals against a kid from Blue Earth. That was a good confidence builder for him.”
Brainerd scored 164 points, finishing behind JCC’s 248.5.
