Brainerd's Beth Etterman executed one of her first eight dives in the Class 2A meet Thursday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Beth Etterman accomplished her first goal on the opening night of the Class 2A diving meet Thursday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
The Brainerd Warrior sophomore qualified for Saturday’s final three dives by placing 13th after eight dives Thursday. She was in 15th place in the 32-diver field after five preliminary dives.
“She did really well,” Warriors diving coach Mary Streiff said. “She was steady all the way through, which is what we knew she would be.
“She wasn’t really nervous. She walked into the Aquatics Center and just seemed comfortable from the first step, the first warm-up. She dove eight solid rounds like we wanted her to.”
Etterman said she wasn’t nervous in her first trip to state.
“I was just trying to relax,” she said. “I was just thinking there’s not a step further that I can go so I wanted to just do the best I can. I was pretty calm and just gave it my all.”
Etterman scored 158.80 points on her first five dives and finished with 245.20 after her next three. Places 11 through 14 are separated by only 3.6 points.
“It’s pretty tight,” Streiff said. “There’s a lot of room for play yet. She’s still eyeing the podium (top 8). She certainly has a shot at the podium.”
Etterman thought her dives were consistent except for one.
“There was one dive I wish I could have done better, the inward one and a half,” she said. “But I’m happy. We’re all pretty close, within a couple points. I’m hoping I can move up in the finals but we’ll see.”
