NORTHFIELD — The Crosby-Ironton Rangers boys team, led by sophomore Jude Severson, raced to a fifth-place finish in the Class 1A state meet Saturday at St. Olaf College.
The Rangers, who had finished second behind Mesabi East in the Section 7-1A meet, finished much stronger than their 14th-place finish at last year’s state meet. Mesabi East finished ninth Saturday.
Severson was the first C-I runner across the finish line in 27th place with a time of 16:56.8, nearly 72 seconds better than his 107th-place finish at the state meet last year.
He was followed by Will Goodwin in 53rd at 17:20.8 and then Jacob Goodwin (56), Seth Carlson (60), John Stokman (96), Issac Carlton (127) and Phil Stokman (141).
“The boys were very excited,” said first-year C-I coach Erica Perpich. “We thought we had a good chance of making the top 10, but we didn’t expect the top five.
“It was a very competitive race — there were a ton of great teams there and it kind of depended on who ran their best race.”
The fifth-place finish tied C-I for the best showing in Ranger cross country history. The girls finished fifth at state in 1984 and the boys matched that placing in 2001, but Saturday’s score of 168 was the lowest ever for C-I at a state meet.
“This was their goal from day one,” said Perpich. “They’ve all put in the time
and effort and then went out and competed very tough.”
The highly-regarded St. Cloud Cathedral Crusader teams won the boys and girls Class A team titles.
Other area runners competing individually in the state meet were Preston Zimny of Little Falls, who was 60th with a time of 16:39.3 in the Class 2A boys meet.
Pequot Lakes’ Michael Ryan finished 63rd (17:27.1) in Class 1A boys.
Emma Schmitz of Wadena-Deer Creek was 82nd (16:19.9) in Class 1A girls.
