VOLLEYBALL: W-DC wins, Warriors fourth at Alex

ALEXANDRIA — The third time was a charm for the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines, who defeated Bemidji 2-0 in the third round of Saturday’s Alexandria tournament and then went on to win tourney with a 2-1 victory over North St. Paul.

The Brainerd Warriors finished fourth after defeating Rocori and Grand Rapids and losing to North in pool play and falling to Bemidji 2-1 in the third-place match.

“We played North, who has been the only team this year to give undefeated Blaine a run for their money,  really well so lots of good things happened,” said Warrior head coach Jared Diem. “We are well above .500 and this may be the first winning season since 2003 which I am very proud of and proud of my girls for accomplishing that goal. A huge factor has been that we have such court encouragement from Tay and Hannah (Kangas). They never get down and most importantly they never get down on their teammates.

“I hope as our younger players watch them from the bench they are seeing what our teams of the future need to be about.”

Brainerd’s Taylor Johnshoy posted 23 digs, 20 kills and six blocks. Courtney Ryan added 19 kills, 37 digs, 8.5 blocks and six ace serves. Sydnie Mauch followed with 17 kills 21 blocks and six digs. Tedi Ramberg also had 17 kills with nine blocks.

Sarah Miller finished with 50 digs and Hannah Kangas added 74 set assists, six ace serves and 13 digs.

“I have been trying to get an end of the season tourney since I began coaching and we finally got one so I was excited to see what things we need to work on before our sections,” said Warrior head coach Jared Diem. “The great thing was that we got to play Bemidji and that game could have gone either way.

“This tourney was a gut check to see how we would respond after getting beaten so badly by Apollo and I feel they responded how they have all year with strength and wins. What I liked this weekend was that we had a very balanced team attack with Courtney, Sydnie, Tedi, Taylor and Mikaela (Chandler) getting kills across the team. Our blocking was probably the talk of the tourney with 63 total blocks as well.”

The Wolverines had lost to Bemidji 2-1 Oct. 8 and 3-2 Oct. 13 before getting the best of the Lumberjacks Saturday.

Emily Miron registered 34 kills, 31 blocks and 10 digs for Class 2A’s ninth-ranked Wolverines. Caitlin Volkmann added 36 digs, 25 kills and five blocks and Heather Theisen concluded the tournament with 86 set assists, 41 digs, six blocks and two ace serves.
