Sydnie Mauch capped a stellar night with a strong fifth-set performance to lead the Brainerd Warriors to a 3-2 win over the Willmar Cardinals in Tuesday’s Central Lakes Conference match at the Brainerd High School.
Mauch finished with 19 kills, two ace serves and six blocks.
Brainerd took a 2-1 lead after three sets before getting thumped by the Cards 25-13 in the fourth. The Warriors took the fifth and deciding set 15-11.
“I’m so proud of our girls for coming back after getting shut down in the fourth set,” said Brainerd coach Jared Diem.
This was the sixth five-set match of the season for the Warriors of which they have won five including a 3-2 decision over Willmar Sept. 1.
“The game ball goes to Sydnie,” said Diem. “She took set five in her hand and decided she was going to win this game. She was just a force.”
Mauch tallied six of her kills and two blocks in the fifth.
Tedi Ramberg added another 14 kills. Hannah Kangas put up 30 set assists while Sarah Miller led with 16 digs and Jenna Degen contributed three ace serves.
“We feel good that we beat the (Conference’s) third-place team for a second time,” said Diem whose team is 7-2 in the conference, 14-8 overall.
Brainerd is second in the CLC standings behind Fergus Falls.
Tuesday’s match was “Diggin’ for a Cure” night, raising funds for the local Pink Ribbon Cupboard and educating fans about breast cancer. Last year, the team raised $1,100 and was hoping to beat that through sales and donations Tuesday night.
