SARTELL — Mitch Bzdok threw out the potential winning run and later drove in the go-ahead run and scored the wining run as the Brainerd Warriors rallied for a 4-2 Central Lakes Conference win over the Sartell Sabres on Tuesday night.
In the bottom of the seventh and the score tied 2-2, Sartell reached on a two-out walk, followed by a single. On a throwing error the Sartell runner tried to score from first and Bzdok threw him out from right field.
In the top of the eighth, Brainerd’s Bruce London received a leadoff walk and took second on a passed ball. Bzdok then tripled to the right field corner, scoring London, and scored the winning run when the throw to third got away from the third baseman.
The win lifted Brainerd to 8-2 in the CLC, 12-3 overall. Brainerd has won six straight games and leads the CLC.
“Our guys have hung in there well all year,” Warriors coach Lowell Scearcy said. “We’ve come from behind how many different times this year to win? That’s a good sign. It’s a good thing when you struggle for wins and by and large we’ve had to do that quite a bit. I think that’s making us a better team as we go.”
Jack Hegarty hit a solo home run in the Brainerd first.
Sartell scored its only runs in the fourth on John Schumer’s two-run double.
Brainerd tied the game in the top of the seventh on three straight hits with two out — a double by Blaine Bubalo, single by Blake Thiesse and an RBI single by Patrick Skogen.
Thiesse was the only Warrior with two hits.
Kevin Peterson started for Brainerd and went 3.2 innings. He gave up two runs, five hits, and three walks. He hit two batters and struck out three.
Mike Smith, who pitched 4.1 innings, got the win. He allowed two hits, and one walk, and struck out five.
