LOCAL SHORTS: Boxing season ends Saturday at Wadena

The final home card of the Golden Gloves Boxing season is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wadena Armory.

A double main event will match Wadena’s T.J. Steward (147) against Brainerd’s Tom Fanjoy and Shane Kearn of Detroit Lakes (165) against Tanner Hultin of Fergus Falls.

Boxers from Wadena, Brainerd, Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, Leech Lake and Nevis are scheduled to participate.

 

Hicks to fight in April

R.T. Hicks of Brainerd has been signed by Strikeforce Mixed Martial Arts and will compete on a card in April in the state of Washington.

Hicks will fight Lyle Beerbom (16-1), who is ranked as one of the top fighters in the world. The bout is on a card that is scheduled to be televised on Showtime.

 

Five area athletes on All-UMAC team

ST. PAUL – Five lakes area athletes were named to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field team Wednesday.

Brainerd High school graduate Tom Lyscio earned all-conference accolades for the second consecutive year by winning the shot put and finishing second in the weight throw. He was named Co-Field Athlete of the Meet. 

BHS graduate Nick Mangan paced the 5,000-meter run.

North Central University’s Alex Farber of Little Falls made the team as he won the high jump and long jump in the conference meet. 

Earning All-UMAC honors for the second consecutive year after winning an event was BHS graduate Katherine Mueller.

First time All-UMAC selections who won events included Little Falls High School graduate Melissa Kempenich in the 5,000-meter run.
