BEMIDJI — The Brainerd Warriors boys tandem of Zean Baker and Riley Nelsen cruised to first place in the boys division of the Bemidji Relays on Saturday.
Baker and Nelsen teamed up to finish the 10-kilometer race in 25:33, beating 12 other teams. Brainerd’s Gerrit Garberich and Tim Nelson placed 13th in 36:53.
Little Falls’ Rickey Devine and Adam Kempenich were second at 26:10 and the Flyers’ Alex Houle and Preston Zimny were third at 26:24.
In the girls race, the Little Falls team of Matia Hendrickson and Chelsea Rutz was first with a time of 30:08. Brainerd’s Allison Kosobud and Sarah Fairbanks were second at 31:04 and Katie Montgomery and Emily Dumbeck were fourth in 33:59. Little Falls’ Sarah Andringa and Daniela Sobiech were fifth at 35:12.
In the mixed relay competition, Bemidji was first at 27:47. Brainerd’s Noah Baker and Jennifer Murray were eighth in 33:38 and Ben Hanson and Rachael Howard were ninth at 33:40.
The Little Falls team of Nathan Almen and Kaitlin Geisenhoff was third at 29:24. Ben Mushel and Chloe Houle were sixth for the Flyers at 31:54.
“Having our top two boys place so well and seeing our girls finish second and fourth against teams we haven’t seen this year that are in our section was encouraging,” Warriors co-head coach Chris Hanson said. “We were also pleased because we battled Little Falls, who we know is a strong team.”
Little Falls was the overall team champion with total time of 2:59.15. Bemidji was second and Brainerd third at 3:14.49.
In the junior varsity boys 5km freestyle race, Brainerd’s Connor Gunsbury was 16th at 15:16. Martina Giger was 10th in the JV girls race at 17:36.
Brainerd is scheduled to ski in the Deer River Invite at 10 a.m. Dec. 28. It will be an all classic race.
