Ice fisherman all over Minnesota were buzzing with excitement with the great early ice conditions we had last week.

We would have been on pace to be able to have the wheelhouses out before Christmas, but then BOOM, mother nature gave us a high five to the face with a foot of snow.

Ice conditions now are slushy to say the least. I know we have some extreme cold in the forecast, but it seems like the slush takes forever to freeze no matter what.

At least we have some snow for muzzleloading season. If you can stay warm it should be worth your time to get back in the woods — with the brutal cold the deer should be out moving and looking for food. Bring a sleeping bag with you and brave the cold. I can say one thing — it sure is beautiful out there right now.

If you are looking to get out of the cold, the St. Paul Ice Show is going on this weekend. Come down and see the new products from Rapala, Northland Tackle and Temple Fork Outfitters. If you are in the market for a new fishhouse, all the biggest and baddest wheelhouses will be there, as well as every ice fishing trinket on the market. It is a great place to see those new must-haves and get them in your hands instead of just seeing them in a magazine.

Just remember, we have all winter to fish. With this heavy load on the ice take your time and be safe. If you make it down to the ice show, stop in and say hi and start making out those Christmas lists.
