Some people call these the dog days of summer but this is actually the start of some great days of fishing. The walleye bite is starting to improve, you just have get down to them. A lot of people stick to the weedlines but if you get out a little deeper to the mid-lake humps and underwater points fish can be had.
For walleyes try leadcore or, if your not equipped for that, use some larger bottom bouncers with your favorite Rapala or spinner rigs. Or, if you can mark some larger schools, try sitting on them with slip bobbers.
If you are looking for some panfish try finding some schools on your locator and sitting on them and bust out the ice gear. Drop down straight over them and drive over them. If that doesn’t turn them into biters try small jigs with spinners and do some trolling to find the biters. The bass bite has been great, you just need to use the right lures to get into the weeds to get to them. Try using Scum frogs. Wacky worm rigs or weedless jigs, you will probably score some nice northerns at the same time.
Also, with the on and off again summer we’ve been having one of the good things is the berry picking has been unbelievable. Raspberries, blueberries and chokecherries are all ready for picking at the same time and it has been a bumper crop. We made a trip to the Park Rapids area last weekend and had gallons of blueberries in no time at all. My hands still have a purple tint to them. The raspberries were still pretty thick also. The blueberry syrup and raspberry jam will sure be good this winter when it’s 20 degrees below zero.
