Just when you thought we were warming up, We’re not!
With the Brainerd area missing the snowstorm of last week and the below zero temps ripping through, I think we will have ice until April.
Mille Lacs Lake is still putting out big fish, from Garrison Reef to the Mud Flats. With next seasons quota cut in half, it will be interesting to see what the slot will be. It really seems this year that it’s important not to give up on your favorite spot as a couple of no-fish days can be followed by limits the next.
Round Lake is still putting out some ‘eyes in 15-25 feet. Gull Lake is still decent — try areas like the hat and shoreline weeds in 14-20 feet for walleyes with shiners.
For panfish try Roy lake as well as Wilson and Steamboat bays on Gull Lake. Cullen, Mission, Perch and Rice lakes have a pretty good panfish bite also. The 371 bay of North Long Lake is still putting out some crappies, while the main lake is producing some walleyes. Pelican Lake also continues to put out some nice eater walleyes.
There is a great new group in the area, Outdoors with Heroes. They’re helping our veterans get out into the outdoors. They will be hosting a benefit dinner Feb. 9 at the American Legion (Brainerd). There will be a pulled pork dinner from 6-7 p.m. Tickets are available at the American Legion or Cashwise Stores Brainerd/Baxter for $15, or $20 at the door or by calling 218-838-5608.
