The cold is here and we are making ice now.
Pretty much all the lakes in the area have 9 to 12 inches of ice but they are not all safe for ATVs with wheel houses as someone on Gull Lake found out last weekend.
The bite has stayed pretty steady, with more anglers spreading out to their favorite fishing spots. Some nicer walleyes being caught on gull in 15 to 19 feet on shiners. Round Lake continues to produce limits of smaller ‘eyes. North Long Lake and South Long Lake are still pushing out some nice panfish, with rice slowing a bit. At Red Lake they are allowing vehicles with fish houses and the bite has been on and off but if you move around your odds are pretty good of going home with dinner. Lake of the Woods is allowing small vehicles and wheel houses with ATVs. The walleyes and sauger have been pretty hungry for either a set line with emerald shiners or jigging spoons like the Macho Minnow or buckshots tipped with a minnow head. Be sure to call ahead before you plan on driving out. Mille lacs has 9 to 11 inches of ice and they are letting out ATVs with some of the resorts getting out the rental houses this week. I should have the rentals out on Gull this weekend. Can’t wait to stay up all night listening to the rattle wheels — it is a beautiful sound.
P.S. The Walleyes on Gull can rest easy knowing the best fisherman on the lake is no longer with us. Rest in peace Nick.
