Roy Lake is part of the Gull Lake Chain and is located about one mile west of Nisswa. It is navigable from either Nisswa Lake via channel or Spider Lake via channel. At 271 acres the lack of size can be deceptive since it holds great populations of fish.
■ Sunfish/Crappies
Roy lake is a long, slender lake that lacks a bunch of structure. Points are a great starting area as are emerging weed areas, specifically bullrushes. Sunfish can be targeted with bobbers, plain hooks and a piece of crawler or leech. For crappies, utilize minnows and cover water. Key in on water temps in Roy Lake to find fish.
With lakes on both ends of it, the fish will move quickly through this small thoroughfare of a lake.
■ Bass/Northern
For both species, target the bullrushes to find eager biters. Spinner baits are a good option early or even crankbaits. Due to the current that moves through, baitfish will be on the move and continually draw active biters. If you can search the shallows for bait, the bass and northern will not be far away. Fancasting areas to cover water or trolling can be the most efficient way to pick off active fish. Marks spots where you catch fish and go back to work them more thoroughly.
Roy has confirmed presence of Zebra Mussels so take care to clean your boats carefully when leaving the access. Roy Lake continues the multitude of nearby lakes that are available to local anglers. Get away from the crowds and give some of these gems a chance and you will not regret that you did.
