Door County, Wis.
I have heard about it numerous times from friends and clients, and now I can say, “I have been there.”
It’s a cool place. We are there filming Mills Fleet Farm’s “We Love It!” Outdoors and the whole family is taking part in this episode. The fishing is phenomenal and the scenery is, too, and we have captured a ton of it. And although we are working, it’s still a bit of a family vacation.
This area is no secret. In fact, when we stopped at Mills Fleet Farm in Green Bay we ran into a gentlemen from Pillager who was heading over here to do some salmon fishing, too. And as we arrived at our resort (The Lodge at Leathem Smith), I heard “Dan” — it was David Heath of Heath’s Resort on Upper Whitefish. It’s a small world.
Our captain out of Gills Rock, Wis., on Lake Michigan was Paul Schwengel. I went out the first day with Paul and we bagged some big ones. And on Friday, Mac and Elizabeth came out with us and each of them hooked up on big fish, too. These salmon are powerful and sure do fill up the cooler nicely. The only part that might not interest some is the early mornings — salmon like the morning; the early morning.
Down riggers, Dipsy divers, copper line, lead core, J Plugs, deep water (90 to 120 feet), Alewives, spiny water fleas and all kinds of new lingo and stuff experienced on this trip.
