MN legislative panels to hear wolf hunting bills

Posted: January 26, 2012 - 11:10am

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota House and Senate panels will be taking their first looks at plans for the resumption of wolf hunting and trapping.

The committees meet Thursday — the day before the state's wolves come off the federal endangered list — to hear details on proposed ground rules for sport wolf hunting and trapping.

The bill from the Department of Natural Resources would let it set the dates and other regulations. The DNR proposes to start the wolf season in late November — after the firearms deer season — with a first quota of 400 wolves.

A bill by Rep. David Dill, D-Crane Lake, would run the wolf hunting season concurrent with the firearms deer season, which starts in early November, when many more hunters are out.

No votes are planned Thursday.
