Have you ever heard of so many fish houses falling through the ice?

My wife and I stopped by the Quarterdeck Resort on Wednesday afternoon and it appeared that “the hole” had shrunk and it should be closed by now.

This is a good thing for the upcoming Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Feb. 11. I think we should be close to the necessary 16 inches of ice on the Hole-in-the-Day Bay site as of this a.m. (Thursday) and hopefully it grows another five to 10 inches in the next three weeks, which it should.

As for the walleye fishing, it’s been good for this neck of the woods. If you haven’t been catching them, move and try fishing in 15 to 18 feet of water. A 1/8-ounce Buckshot Rattle Spoon (green/glow) tipped with a minnow head has been producing for us.

If you don’t like hearing this kind of report, head south to the Minneapolis Boat Show that runs through the weekend.
